n.. ..,j~
. .It. '

As viII be noted from the preceding chart, the larger depletions bave
occurred in the regions of limited precipitation where regulation of
flovs and irrigation are primarily practiced.

The following chart indicates the increasing runoff and the in-
creasing depletions as one proceeds downstream along the Missouri River.

Although there Is a substantial quantity of vater leaving the Missouri
Basin much of this water bas served many purposes, such as municipal and
industrial vater, irrigation vater, production of hydroelectric pover,
use for recreation and fish and wildlife purposes, and for navigation. It
can still be utilized more fully if we take care of it and maintain a suit.
able quality. While the picture Is rather bright when considering the
total Missouri Basin, there are parts of the Basin vhich do not have quite
as favorable an outlook. Many of the areas have developments which currently
utilize most of the available supply. Areas most in need of water resources
use are generally lacking in the availability of the resources because of
lo~ precipitation and high evapo-transpiration, ~hich gives less runoff.
The planning effort in connection vith the Framevork Study will attempt to
maximize the use of the available supply.

Further .ark on estimated future conditions 'Jill be required, but these
cannot be accomplished until at least the initial phases of the planning
effort have been carried on. As tentative plans become available, appraisals
viII be undertaken to assess the effect of such developments on the supplies
of both surface and ground vater.

19

f;f~:
,.,..,..
',;
-.,

.,',-

~~(~
'1.";-
<" .~

~:o.:.

"

-.....

-.
-
:~~

};:.-:'

~;~l:
:~.;.'..
.
