'X>
m
'-D
o
o
~.)

SUMMARY

The monitoring plan described herein will be used to determine the

effectiveness of distribution system and On-Farm Improvements in reducing salt

loading from the Stage One area of the Grand Valley Unit of the Colorado River

Basin Salinity Control Project and to determine the effects of the improvement

on wildlife resources. The Stage One area was selected for initial

construction because of the availability of substantial. ground and surface

water quantity and quality data under preproject conditions.

The proposed monitoring program will make use of both quantitative and

qualitative measurements of ground-water and surface weLter response to the

project. The ultimate effect will be registered at the gaging station on Reed

Wash, located at the lower end of the study area, where, it measures the total

salt and water outflow. The gaging station is equipped with continuous water

stage and electrical conductivity recorders. A total dissolved solids sample

is taken weekly and complete chemical analyses are obtained monthly. A

comparison of salt load at this station with anticipated results will be the

measurement of project effectiveness. Preproject condi~tions, actual

experience, and estimated postproject water and salt budgets for the Reed Wash

Study Area will be compared.

Hydrographs of observation wells, measurements of discharge and electrical

conductivities of drains in the study area, and photographic recordings of

surface seeps will give early indications of changes in ground-water volume and

outflow. Although these measurements may not give rigorous quantitative

results, they will be early indicators of project effects. The data collected

from the monitoring system will be stored in computer accessible data files

which will permit rapid analysis and comparison of pre and postproject

conditions.

iii
