The first set of infrared aerial photographs were obtained

in early April as water was being diverted into the canal system. The second

was obtained in late September near the end of the irrigation season.

Water and Salt Budgets

During 1976, detailed data collected for the Reed Wa:,h study area were

developed into annual preproject water and salt budgets (:figures 3 and 4),

from the monthly data. These yearly data were extrapolated to the Stage One

area (Figures 5 and 6) according to the following criteri..,

1. Reed Wash study area has 5,100 acres of irrigat,.d cropland as
compared to 6;300 acres in the Stage One area.

2. Government Highline Canal outflows are the same for both areas.

3. Stage One lateral diversions are equal to Reed l,ash Government
Highline lateral diversions plus Laterals 43 and 43 1/4 outside
the Reed Wash study area. These two laterals have annual flows
of 7,600 acre-feet as prorated from their respeetive capacities.

4. There are no exports or administrative spills from the Government
Highline Canal in the Stage One Area.

5. Precipitation, ET, deep percolation, and inflow from above the
Government Highline Canal were calculated on th,. basis of the ratio
of irrigated areas.

6. Lateral and canal leakage as shown in Table 4.

Proposed Additions to the Monitoring System

The existing monitoring system and data are adequate for project

construction, but a few additions could help clarify some items and make

post construction effects easier to recognize. There will be more time for

pre construction monitoring than was first programmed, so these additions could

be in place in time to get base-line data.

The weather data used in the calculation of consumptive use were extra-

polated from the Grand Junction airport. Because of the localized micro-

climate in the western end of the valley, a weather station in the Reed Wash

22
