00
~
~
(..:J
o
o

wells have been destroyed. Additionally, two wells were installed into

bedrock just north of Government Highline Canal and have been sampled since

summer 1975 (Table 1).

Additional wells were installed throughout the Grand Valley in the

summer of 1977. Twenty-one of these wells are in the vicinity of Stage One.

These wells were drilled to bedrock and 2-inch diameter perforated rigid

PVC casing was installed. Three-inch steel standpipes and caps were

concreted in place over the PVC casing. Five of these wells are along the

Government Highline Canal, 13 along the south bank of Kiefer Extension of

Grand Valley Canal, and three are in the Mack Wash drainage. The sampling

program was the same as for the wells installed in 1974. Sampling frequency

is given in Table 1.

Recorder Well s

In 1976, several recorder wells were installed adjacent to the 1974

observation wells. These recorder wells consist of 8-inch diameter plastic

perforated casing. A Stevens water stage recorder is installed in each well

to obtain a continuous record of water table response. Because some wells

were destroyed and some showed no response, only eight of these wells had

recorders in 1979.

Piezometers

A few piezometer clusters were installed 1n the Reed Wash area to moni-

tor vertical gradients of water pressure through the weathered Mancos Shale

profile. Each cluster has two piezometers, each penetrating a different

depth, with the deeper one resting on the unweathered shale surface. The

various levels were sealed from the other levels with a bentonite slurry.

7
