<br />002463 <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S MONTHLY REPORT <br />TO THE <br />COLORADO RIVER BOARD OF CALIFORNIA <br /> <br />July 9. 2002 <br /> <br />RECEIVED <br />JUL 1 'i 2002 <br /> <br />ADMINISTRATION <br /> <br />Colorado Water <br />r~.nservation Board <br /> <br />Colorado River Basin Water Supplv Infonnational Workshop <br /> <br />During the May and June 2002, Board meetings, there has been lengthy discussion of the <br />seriousness of the drought conditions along the Colorado River, and within the Basin; the importance <br />of the timely implementation of California's Colorado River Water Use Plan, including execution of <br />the Quantification Settlement Agreement; and the need to better inform a broader audience of the <br />Board's concerns in both of these areas. Included in your handout materials is a copy of the proposed <br />press release, public notification, and agenda for the Workshop. The Workshop will be held at The <br />Metropolitan Water District of Southern California Headquarters in Los Angeles, on July 24,2002. <br />- ' <br /> <br />As we have discussed previously, the goal of the workshop is to provide an overview of the <br />following topics: (I) review the importance of the Colorado River to the State of California; (2) how <br />the river system is operated and administered; (3) basinwide hydrology and meteorological/climatic <br />outlooks; (4) basin storage and runoff forecasts; (5) interim surplus guidelines and benefits to <br />California; (6) status of the Quantification Settlement Agreement (QSA); and (7) potential impacts <br />to California and Nevada without a signed QSA and the interim surplus guidelines. <br /> <br />At this time we have confirmed the participation of the following individuals: Mr. Bennett <br />Raley, Assistant Secretary for Water and Science, Department of the Interior; Ms. Mary Nichols, <br />Secretary of Resources; Mr. Wayne Cook, Upper Colorado River Commission; and Ms. Pat Mulroy, <br />Southern Nevada Water Authority. Mr. Mork of the California Department of Water Resources has <br />committed to discuss the current and future meteorological and climatic conditions within California <br />and the Colorado River Basin. Representatives of the agencies on the Colorado River Board are <br />being requested to describe the status of the various local and regional initiatives included within <br />California's Colorado River Water Use Plan and the process for bringing them to conclusion. <br /> <br />Letter to the Bureau of Reclamation Regarding the June 18.2002. Tour of Hoover Dam <br /> <br />A very infonnative tour of Hoover Dam was held in conjunction with the June Board meeting. <br />Included in your Board folder is a copy of a letter that was sent to Mr. Robert W. Johnson, Regional <br />Director, U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation) thanking hirnand his stafffor our June 18,2002, <br />tour of Hoover Dam. <br /> <br />Letter to the Southern Nevada Water Authority Regarding the June 18.2002. Tour of Las Vegas <br />Wash <br /> <br />Included in the Board folder is a copy of a letter to Ms. Patricia Mulroy, General Manager <br />of the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNW A), thanking the SNW A staff for the tour ofthe Las <br />
