The punched card system used is identical with <br />that ef the Weather Bureau. <br /> <br />i; <br /> <br />Many lecal gevernment agencies have expensive climate- <br />legical data netwerks which have been in operatien fer some <br />time and ethers have recently started pregrams of their ewn. <br />The department cellects recerds frem abeut 20 private agencies <br />which include utility cempanies, land cempanies, railread cempanies <br />and celleges, and frem 14 federal agencies. The department itself <br />maintains 30 seasenal storage gages at remete meuntain locatiens. <br />It is by no' means the intent that the department's <br />pregram will duplicate er curtail the services ef the Weather <br />Bureau. Under existing law the Weather Bureau cannet accept <br /> <br />nen-federal funds fer data cellectien activities. The department <br /> <br />has therefere reserted to' assigning two' state empleyees to' werk <br /> <br />with the Weather Recerds Precessing Center in San Francisco'. As <br />a result ef this assistance the Weather Bureau has agreed to' add <br />100 statiens to' its published netwerR in Califernia. The depart- <br />ment supperted Senate Bill 3539, introduced in the last sessier <br />ef the Cengress, which weuld have autherized the Weather Bureau <br />to' accept nen-federal funds. Cest sharing by the State in the <br />werk ef the U. S. Geelegical Survey and the U. S. Department ef <br />Agriculture has resulted in a substantial expansien ef their <br />werk in the State.
