For the most part, construction will be <br />by the Bureau of Reclamation with the state making monthly <br />payments for its share of the cost. <br /> <br />Repayment Assurances <br />As reported previously, the state has guaranteed repay- <br />ment of the costs allocated to conservation at two Corps of <br />Engineers projects in California, and funds have been appropriated <br />for the purpose. Construction is under way on Black Butte Dam <br />on stony Creek and will start soon on New Hogan Dam on Calaveras <br />River. During the 1959 legislative session, a bill was passed <br />authorizing similar repayment assurances to expedite construc- <br />tion of the Sacramento Valley Canal Unit of the Central Valley <br />Project. To date, however, only $150,000 has been budgeted for <br />thut purpose. <br /> <br />!:,1.et~orology <br />Predecessor agencies of the State Department of Water <br />Resources have been collecting and utilizing climatological data <br />over a long period of time, the U. S. Weather Bureau being the <br />principal but not the exclusive source. Until recently, collec- <br />tion of the data has been in connection with a specific problem <br />or investigation, density and areal extent of coverage varying <br />with the availability of records and the needs of the investiga- <br />tion. In a report to the legislature in 1923, the Division of <br />Engineering and Irrigation of the Department of Public Works, <br />utilized about 260 Weather Bureau Stations in connection with <br />estimates of water supply throughout the state.
