Somewhat more than half of this
amount is budgeted to the long established mapping and stream gaging
programs which have been carried on in cooperation with the Geological
Survey. Other programs for which state funds have been made available
include irrigation research, groundwater basin and subsidence studies,
specific yield studies, beach erosion investigations, research in
snow pack management, sediment investigations, water quality inves-

tigations, and other specialized studies. One of the last named
involves th~ development, installation, and rating of an ultrasonic
stream measuring station.
The gathering and processing of basic data is an increas-
ingly important activity of the Department of Water Resources.
Roughly $3,600,000 was appropriated for purposes which might be so
classified. " The Legislature specified that $75,000 of the amount
appropriated should be used only for a study of the basic data program
of the Department of Water Resources to establish the long-range
objectives, guide~ and priorities. A board of nationally known
consultants has been appointed and they, in turn, have chosen a firm
to carryon the detailed investigation and report to them.
An agreement which has as its ultimate objective the
coordinated operation of the Central Valley Project and the Feather

.t;

ji':' .;;~,. ,'.,;,:;, _J,Wi
