62 percent of gross product originating in 1958 1;0 31 percent
in 1968. The automation of the major refinerie~ is about com-
pleted while a: numbe.r of smaller ones have not ,'yet been automated.
This phenomena did not alter the trend in GPO l?ut did alter the
trend in earnings. Earnings have been projectep to decline as a
percent of GPO only slightly in the future.

~if"0:;
.~...

i;~~~;?'~;
~'.' :.:':-....~
~~~:_;~:f~
;1
002913
2. Additional Industrial Detail
Additional industrial detail was requested for. industries
within the manufacturing sector.
Until additional data series can be developed it is not possible
to provide additional detail.
It was. requested that recreation and tourism be broken out
as an industry.
This will require a major program to develop measures of
recreation and tourism. At present recreation and tourism are
mixed in with the measures of services and trade. The establish-
ment of recreation and tourism measures is something we hope to
do but we do not now have the resources.
3. Discrepancies Between Earnings and Employment
One reviewer pointed out the fact that when economic area
earnings are divided by economic area employment the earnings _
per worker differ greatly by industry and wondered if an error
had been 'lllade.
This difference does not result from an error but rather
from the fact the inconsistent classification systems are.used
in the two series. In the Census of Population employment
series government workers are classified by industry while in
the OBE earnings series all government earnings are included
under government. Thus while public school teachers and public
health doctors are carried under professional services in the
employment table, their earnings are included under government
in the earnings table.
This discrepancy was taken into account in analysing the
historic data and in making the projections. OBE is now develop-
ing an employment series which will be conceptually consistent
with the earnings data but that series will not be ready in time for
this report.
}
}h~~:~~.;
.....'...,-..
~~<:;: :_'~ :;*:
.. .
~~~~r:?i~~~~:
.:<. ..
;:;.,.- ,'--.J

:.~~-'~,;.--~ -;:

9

. .;.~~., -.--

~:: ~:<':':"
