(l'{J '::J i

.

.

Also in the handout is a copy of a report, prepared by the Grand County Council, entitled
Atlas Uranium Mill Tailings Site, Grand County, Utah. Mr. Al McLeod, Chairman of the Grand
County Council, has requested an opportunity to discuss Grand County's concerns with the Board.

Perchlorate Contamination in the Las Vegas Wash

Included in the Board handout is a draft letter to be sent from the Board to the Administrator
of the Environmental Protection Agency (EP A) requesting its support in cleaning up the perchlorate
contamination in the Colorado River emanating from the Henderson, Nevada area. Kerr-McGee,
the company from whose property the contamination is emanating, has agreed to intercept the
groundwater contamination at its property line and divert it to on-site evaporation ponds. By this
letter, the Colorado River Board is requesting that the EPA assist the Southern Nevada Water
Authority in intercepting the groundwater contamination off-site of Kerr-MeGee's property before
it can reach the Las Vegas Wash and enter the Colorado River.

Yuma Desalting Plant

Included in the Board folder, as an informational item, is a letter from Reclamation which
discusses the operational status of the Yuma Desalting Plant, and the condition of the reverse
osmosis membranes. As you are aware, this facility has been placed in a ready-reserve category due
to the hydrologic conditions that are currently existing on the Colorado River System. Reclamation
has estimated that it would take approximately 24 months to bring the plant from zero operation to
operation at full capacity, at a cost of approximately $33 million. Subsequent year O&M costs are
estimated at $24 million per year.

r

~e.~.!>"'J_"~""-

.- Gerald R. Zimmerman
Executi ve Director

7
