.

rainbow trouts. Rainbow trout were also used as the

.......
--.1
0)
().)

target species for the Colorado River reach upstream from
the Roller Dam to Rifle, Colorado but the habitat for all
life stages appears to be in short supply.

.

3' Channel catfish, at least the adults, find excellent

habitat conditions in the White River downstream from

Meeker, Colorado. In the Colorado River downstream from

the Gunnison River confluence, it appears that lack of

spawning habitat may be a limiting factor, although again

the "poor" rating may be because the methods used were too

"broad-brush" to pick up the critical habitat. The find-

ings of an excellent amount of WUA available for fry,

however, would seem to argue against any lack of suffi-

cient sensitivity in the methodology. Conditions for

jUlleniles and adults are generally fair in this reach,

which accords with general biological knowledge of the

ri ver.

4' The fi ndi ngs concerni ng the mountai n whitefi sh, selected

as the target species for the White River upstream from

Meeker to Buford, Colorado, are also in accord with

general knowledge of the stream. It is quite well known

as a whitefish stream and the findings of good to excel-

lent amounts of WUA support this.

.

56
