~

d. New Data Obtained by the CIFSG

l-'
-.J
W
OJ

Data for five selected reaches were obtained in the field by

the CIFSG staff using reconnaissance procedures.

I' Selection of Stream Segment for Cross-section Location

The methodology spec ifi es that cros s- sect ions be taken
through a typical pool and a typical riffle. This neces-
s itated a reconna is sance of the cand i date reach in order

to get a "feel" for what was typical. In the course of
this reconnaissance, a mental estimate was made as to the

.

average length of pools and riffles, the pool-riffle
ratio, and the percent of water area represented by the
sum of pool and riffle area.

2' Number and Location of Cross-sections

Three cross-sections were taken. One was located about

midway through a "typical" pool, one midway through a
"typical" riffle, and one across the midsection of the
intervening reach, call it run, glide, flat, or transi-
tion. Distances between cross-sections were measured by

pacing.

For greater convenience in subsequent model

.

simulation, it is desireable that the cross-sections begin

with a riffle and be in series upstream through a pool/

transition or transition/pool sequence.

24
