.

need for gasification becom~s more significant, new means of gasifying
coal will certainly become the focus of further experimentation.

'\)
-
ooJ
l\;;l

The reasons for the location of coal gasification facilities are
somewhat complex. Any coal reSource can be adapted to the variety of
gasification technologies, but the economic attractiveness of that coal
is increased if it can be mined by surface methods, which are generally
cheaper. The availability of a reliable water source for use in cooling
and to provide hydrogen for the "H-process" of gas production is also
important. Nearby pipelines make the process less expensive at the
outset, but lack of this network does not necessarily preclude the
loc.ation of a gasification plant. As long as the political climate is
favorable and supply shortages continue, industry incentive will con-
tinue. Since technology is not a limiting factor, an increasing number
of plants can be expected to be developed near coal and water resourceS.

.

.

B-12
