~
o
W extensive development, the Vernal District has required the operator to complete mitigation
o measures for access road, waterline, and wellpad impacts. Watershect mitigation measures, all paid
for by the field Qperators, saved approximately 60 tons of salt. The measures included erosion
control structures, water bars, reseeding, hydro mulching, and working with the BLM staff on the
proper road and wellpad construction.

In the Cedar City District, the 1996 Skutumpah 450 acre burn is being reseeded withParia River
salt savings anticipated. Extensive fire rehabilitation was accomplished in the Dixie Resource area,
as well as a 700 acre treatmentfor sage encroachment of an old seeding on Little Creek Mountain,
tributary to the Virgin River. The $16,000 .tebuthiuron treatment cost was shared with the
livestock permittee.

The Muddy Creek PJ ch'aining (Natural Resources Conservation Service) is underway in the Kanab
Area, and currently involves 500 acres of public land. Also in the Paria Drainage of the Escalante
Resource Area, willow and other riparian' plantings have been supported by volunteers and BiM
funding at Henryville Creek.

,{
,
:}
~~
Ii
~
~1
}~ .
..;:
"'~
<,
;~
ll,~
f~
:;\'
d
:j
';3
;.:1
::~
\t
:~
~~:i

Richfield District constructed three silt-free reservoirs in Garfield County, tributary to Hansen
CreekILake Powell using range improvement and livestock permittee funds. Much of the BLM's
FY-96 field activities in the Hanksville Resource Area indirectly benefit salt savings In the
Fremont ,andDirty Devil watersheds. "

In the Moab District, a fence was constructed to rest a riparian area adjacetlt to Grassy Trail Creek,
saving 5 tons/year of salt through elimination of bank trampling and erosion. As a result of a 1995
road failure above the confluence of Dry Creek and Nine Mile Creek, a'salt loading event of 15
tons occurred into the Nine Mile Creek/Green River system. Recent road reconstruction by the
Moab field office has stopped the continued cutting and leaching of salts from fresh marine'
deposits, and stopped an estimated two tons of annual salt loading.

The Walker F1atweIl is an abandoned coal exploration hole with artesian saline flow.
Responsibility for the well was assumed'by the BLM. The uncontrolled flow has created a 15 by
40 foot wide gully or'500 feet length in saline deposits, and it yields 121 tonsofsaltper year. The
Utah State Office will issue a request for bids to plug the well by the end of September, 1996
, ($50,000 cost-estimate).

Wyoming

Within the Muddy Creek watershed of the Great Divide Resource Area, the BLM and the Little
Snake River Conservation District cooperated to accomplish salinity monitoring objectives, using
conventional and electronic equipment. The surface water gage at Red Creek was maintained and
operated to continue monitoring water quality improvements from implementation of the Red
Creek Management Plan treatment and rehabilitation actions. A total of six water quality
monitoring stations were operated in FY -96 on public lands of the Basin.

":.
;:;1
fj
;~
~~
~;~
::~
":-'i
,
:.:~
;~1,

Rawlins District completed a reservoir to facilitate'livestock grazing management. Preliminary
work (site inspection, survey/design and NEPA compliance) was also begun on three similar
Rawlins District facilities. Red osier dogwood, currant species, and various willow were planted
in parts of Littlefield Creek and Upper Muddy Creek.

J
,.:;~
:~
_~1
"4
;~ti

17

--
