~

O~200

.

.

-

17. Associated needs. - Sediment control, stream pollution abate-

ment, enhancement of the environment for fish and wildlife and provisions

for recreation, are other associated needs of, the'projeGt area. The

sediment load carried by Purgatoire River contributes appreciably to the

difficulties and expense of operating and maintaining the diversion and

other facilities for irrigation. The capture of sediments originating

above the reservoir site in the proposed Trinidad Reservoir will do much

to alleviate this problem. Bed load movement in water courses is a geo-

logical process and no corrective measures are available other than

retardation and retention in reservoirs. However, permanent alleviation

of the sediment problem can be achieved by adequate land management and

erosion control in the watershed, especially in areas that may contrib-

ute heavily to the total sediment load.

18. The concentration of population in the City of Trinidad and

the nearby mining communities presents a need for increased recreational

facilities. Continued studies of the Trinidad Reservoir are needed to

develop all of the potentialities for improvement of fish and wildlife

resources and recreational opportunities.

PLAN OF DEVELOPMENT

19.
