<br />" <br />II' <br /> <br />~ <br />, <br /> <br />0196 <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />8-8-74 <br />Western Resources Wrap-up <br />Series x, No. 32 <br />water for energy in Upper Bas:ffi~WATER <br />lead stb~[R'IA:IOI'1 BOAR~ <br />Washington-TO meet the projected water requirement 'of 873,650 <br />acre-feet for coal and oil shale development in the Upper Colorado Riv- <br />er Basin and other Basin water needs by year 2000, new storage reser- <br />voirs and augmentation of the Colorado River must begin soon. <br />The water for Energy Management Team has just made that recommenda- <br />tion to the Secretary of ,Interior and to the five governors whose states <br />lie wholly or partially within the Upper Basin--COlorado, New Mexico, <br />utah, Wyoming and Arizona. <br />By year 2000 the Team estimates that 18 coal-fired electric gener- <br />ating plants with a cap?city of 34,120,000 kilowatts, 11 oil shale pro- <br />jects with a capacity of 1,515,000 barrels of shale oil a day, and 4 <br />of gas <br />coal gasification plants with a capacity of 2,902 million cubic feetla <br />day will be operating in the Upper Basin. <br />The breakdown by state is as follows: Colorado--12 plants,olfWhich <br />7 are projected to be oil shale and 5 coal-fired power plants; ~-lO, <br />of which 6 are coal-fired power plants, 3 oil shale plants and 1 coal <br />gasification plant: WvominQ-6. of which 4 are coal-fired power plants, <br />1 oil shale and 1 coal gasification plant: New MexicO--4, of which 2 are <br />- <br /> <br />coal gasification plants and 2 coal-fired electric plants: and Arizona <br />1 electric !Wal-fired plant. <br />ihe production of energy from these plants and their use of t-Tater <br />is estimated by the Team as follows: <br />a <br />Colorado's coal-fired power plants would have/capacity of 8,970, <br />000 kilowatts,and its shale plants an output of 1,090,000 barrels of <br />oil a day, requiring a total of 325,600 acre-feet of Upper Basin water <br />annually. <br />utah's coal-fired power plants with a capacity of 10,630,000 row, <br />its shale plants with an output of 300,000 barrels of oil a day, and a <br />coal gasification plant with an output of 864,000 million cubic feet of <br />gas a day would require use of 243,450 acre-feet of Upper Basin water ~ <br />year. . -r <br /> <br />RECEIVED <br /> <br />AUG 12 1974 <br /> <br />From: Helene C.
