Picture No. P55l.427-147, taken at approximately station 70+00,
,shows the canal. to be in good condition. When the canal was full of
water, it appeared that coarse gravel protection was needed for 75
feet upstream from the. highway sign.

Pictures No. P551-427-148 and ,149, taken at approximately station
631+50, are a section that was lined by the water users.with thick
earth with a cover of coarse gravel in 1967. This section is in good
condition.

Pictures No. P551-427.150 and 151, taken at approximately station
1133+00, show a section of unlined canal. This shows a section where
some erosion is occurrrlng. However, most of the section has developed
good rock paving and is stable. Some additional coarse gravel pro-
tection on the curves would be desireable.

Pictures No. P551-427-152 and 153; taken at station 1325+00,
show a section of canal that was lined with 6 inches of gravelly clay.
The section is well armored with gravel and seems to be in good condi-
tion. Pictures P551-427-154 and 155, taken at station 1369+00, show
the same.

After completing the detailed inspection and seepage 10ss measure-
ments on the canal, Bureau of Reclamation personnel believe the canal
is in very good condition. Most of canal sections that have not ,been
lined with thick earth with gravel cover or concrete have experienced
some erosion, however these sections are now paved quite well with
. rock and have apparently stabilized. Now that t.he canal has stabilized
the fairly high velocity of water flow carries any silt that enters
the canal on through the canal. This reduces the opportunity for the
fine silts to seal possible leaky spots in the canal but tends to
reduce maintenance costs by reducing silt deposition.in the canal
prisDl.

With good maintenance in the future, the canal should operate
safely and satisfactorily. During the Bureau's inspection, two lists
of sections of the canal that were in need of maintenance were pre-
pared and are presenteQ in tabular form below. One list included
sections that needed attention this fall and next spring before the
1972 ii-rigation season and the second list included sections that need
attention during the next two years.

Canal sections requiring work during faIl 1971 or spring 1972:

Canal Stations.
313+35 to 31?+75

Section Length (ft)
540

'--...}.

Work Needed
% section thick earth lining
with grave 1 cover and more
freeboard

-.,,."'-

. 328+60 to 329+35
.341+00 to 342+00

.. 1059+73 to 1061+37
1190+00 to 1191+00
i
. ,Totals
I.
I
,

75
100

"

164
100

Coarse gravel protection out-
side bank and more freeboard
II

..615

Coarse gravel protection out-
side bank
~ section thick earth lining
with grave 1 cover and more
-\' ,'''-''- bca....cl..
