Bureau of Reclamation <br /> <br />"I <br />'~." <br />:<:. <br />:'A <br /> <br />SAN LUIS VALLEY PROJECT, COLORADO <br /> <br />~: 1 <br />, <br />, <br />.., <br />'"_l <br /> <br />Conejos Division, Platoro Reservoir <br /> <br />Platoro Dam and Reservoir is operated and maintained by the Conejos Water <br />Conservancy District in Manassa, Colorado, The reservoir began 1996 with a content <br />of 45,213 acre-feet (af) and was filled to the top of the conservation pool at 53,570 <br />af on May 21, For 1996, the reservoir was used extensively to regulate the spring and <br />summer flows to maximize the use of the short runoff period, The reservoir was not <br />operated for flood control purposes during the 1996 spring runoff. <br /> <br />The May 1 forecast for the Conejos River near Mogote was estimated to be 115,000 <br />af, which was 57-percent of the 30-year average. The reservoir was drawn down to <br />21,135 af by October 31, the end of the irrigation season for the Conejos Water <br />Conservancy District. Due to the low runoff, supplemental irrigation releases were <br />relatively high at 32,200 af. On November 1, the release was set at 7.1 cubic-feet per <br />second (cfs), which exceeds the 7 cfsminimum required by statute. The end-of-year <br />storage for Platoro was 21,850 af. <br /> <br />During the year, there was one 3-day outage of supervisory equipment due to phone <br />lines taken out of service by lightening. In addition, the transmission on the fluid data <br />gage was replaced on May 2 due to its erratic behavior. <br /> <br />.> <br /> <br />3 <br />
