Celebrating the River <br /> <br />\ Goal: Celebrations along the River will help <br />achieve the vision for the Platte River Corridor. <br /> <br />Suggested Specific Events: <br /> <br />April 22.1995 (Earth Day) South Platte Regalla. The main <br />focus will be River cleanup for the full 10.5 miles through <br />Denver. To be coordinated by the River Heritage Society, with <br />the cooperation of Colorado River Outfillers Association, <br />Colorado Canoe Club, Colorado White Water Association, <br />Ocean Journey, National Civilian Community Corps, Denver <br />Urban Conservation Corps, U.S. Environmental Protection <br />Agency and others. Youth will be invited frofil nearby recre- <br />ation centers. Adult volunteers will come from various coop- <br />cr<lting organizations as well as the neighborhoods along the <br />River. As it reward for community service, youth participat- <br />ing in this cleanup would be in\'itcd to cume on a raft trip <br />d<.l\....n the River the next \veekL'nd. <br /> <br />The following is the action item in support of this <br />goal and the vision. <br /> <br />Time frame: Begin in 1995. <br /> <br />Brief description and background: Many people are unaware of <br />the River corridor's current resources and much improved <br />health. Celebrations along the River will help citizens to real- <br />ize what a tremendous asset the River is and to know more <br />about specific ongoing progress. <br /> <br />Location: Throughout the Greenway. <br /> <br />Benefits: Encourages stewardship of the River by helping to <br />inform people about what is there, as well as what could be <br />there. <br /> <br />Resources: Platte River Greenway Foundation, the River <br />Heritage Society and US. Environmental Protection Agency, <br />other agencies and foundations <br /> <br />who is responsible for moking this happen: <br />Plalte River Greenway Foundation (Contact: Jeff Shoemaker, <br />698-1322) <br />River Heritage Society (Contact: Randy Choun. 477-0379) <br /> <br />Ill/Ie 1995 will include a tree pl,mting day. Urban Drainage <br />will provide a survey of ttlL' .1fedS to be planted and the lypL's <br />of trees needed. <br /> <br />11I/y1995 will include a day to build bat houses to encour,'gc <br />these beneficial creatures. Colorado Division of Wildlife will <br />provide plans and materials for building and IOCdting the <br />houses.
