Indirect impacts include those not associated with
placement of fill, but that are expected to occur as a result of overall operation of the
project. The latter category includes the erosive effects of high flows, and impacts of
channel adjustments associated with the higher flows.

Table 1 below summarizes anticipated impacts associated with the project.

Table 1
Summary of Anticipated Project Effects on Wetlands

Alternative E-1 Alternative E-2 Alternative E-3
Short- Long- Short- Long- Short- Long-
Activity term term term term term term
effect effect effect effect effect effect
(acres) (acres (acres) (acres) (acres) (acres)
1. Annual emergents on widened channel bed are not included in total. See below.
[b]. Backwaters and recharge of off-channel areas are not included in total. See
below.

"Widening" represents the total losses that would occur for long-term channel
adjustment. Wetlands studies completed by Sponsors have indicated that all of these
losses should be replaced through a natural resetting of wetlands with the new channel
margins. The net, long-term impact is estimated to be zero. Consultants believe this
because post-project growing-season hydrology is equal to or better that the existing
hydrology, and sufficient hydric soils and seeds sources for wetland establishment are
plentiful. Nonetheless, these short-term impacts will be mitigated, as discussed below.

"Enhanced and diminished diversity" reflect the anticipated benefit of additional project-
related water in the growing season. Most of the project's hydrologic input to the system
will occur during the winter. This water will have little in the way of positive or negative

AB Lateral Hydropower Project

JUly 2000

.
i
~
-},

i
./

J,

.
i '~'I
<~:,,,~j
.,.ir...lA"
-M"','>':;""~~:'~!,t.,_
