Ruedi water releases for fish
subject of Glenwood meeting

By the Glenwood Post
A meeting on endangered fish
and water releases will be held
Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Hotel Col-
orado.
Ruedi Reservoir is one of the
dams that the Bureau of Reclama-
tion says may release water to im-
prove the habitat of four native fish
now listed as endangered.
Members of the Coordinated
Reservoirs Study Tearn, comprised
of major reservoir operators and
water management agencies, will
give presentations on a proposed
process of coordinating operations
. at participating reservoirs, the p0-
tential for the release of inflows and
the fish recovery program.
The study was established to
evaluate opportunities to modify
and coordinate the operations of
various.reservoirs in the Colorado
River basin upstream of the conflu-
ence of the Colorado and Gunnison
rivers.
The goal is to enhance peak
flows in the Colorado River near
Cameo to improve critical habitat
for endangered fish.
The Colorado squawfish, hump-
back chub, razorback sucker and
bonytail were once abundant in the
upper Colorado River Basin and are

now federally listed as endangered.
The enhancement of peak flows is
meant to improve habitats for Col-
orado squawfish and may restore
some floodplain habitats for the
other species.
The Bureau of Reclamation says
the reservoir modifications that are
being considered are voluntary and
do not affect project yields, project
safety, downstream safety or the
ability of reservoirs to fill.
In mid- to late-April, the study
team will hold meetings to present
initial operating plans and receive
public comments.
In addition to Ruedi Reservoir,
Dillon, Green Mountain, Williams
Fork and Wolford Mountain reser-
voirs are being proposed to partici-,
pate.
The study team includes repre-
sentatives of the Colorado River
Water Conservation District, the
Recovery Program, Fish and
Wildlife Service, National Weather
Service, Bureau of Reclamation,
Colorado Water Conservation
Board, Colorado Division of
Wildlife and the Colorado Division
of Water Resources.
For information, contact Mal-
colm Wilson at the Bureau of
Reclamation, (970) 667-4410.

PAGE 2.
