ANIMAS-LA PLATA PROJECT

March 1975

LOCAT].Qri

The Animas-La Plata Project would be located in La Plata and Monte-
zuma Counties of southwestern Colorado and San Juan County of north-
ern New Mexico in the Upper Colorado River Basin.

,

AUTHORIZATION
~,_._----_.....--

~j
~

The construction, operation end maintenance of tha Animas-La Plata
Project was authorized under Title V of Public Law 90-537, September
3D, 1968 as a participating project under the Colorado River Storage
Project (CRSP) Act (70 Stat. 105; 43 U.S.C. 620).

^
.,

STATUS OF PLANNING
----------.........-........-......

The Definite Plan Report is scheduled for completion by July 1976.
Current planning work is being concentrated on reformulating the
project plan to better meet the needs of the local area, keeping in
mind national priorities, including environmental enhancement. Input
to this planning effort is being provided locally by a 45-member
citizen advisory team.

,-'1

(t

.,
f}

<

",

PROJECT AREA NEEDS

"
,;,',
i""

;;f..
"J
,

The project service area has for many years been characterized by
high unemployment and depressed incomes. The agricultural area
consists of irrigated farms which have less than half the water
supply need for option crop production and so called "dry" farms
which are entirely dependent upon the meager precipitation of the
arid area. Many inhabitants of the rural areas must resort to
hauling their domestic water from distant sources.

1
