NeaJ:'ly all of the area lies within the boundaries of the

o.
('-'")
W
(;")
CJl
""

Navajo Indian Nation. It is estimated that there are about 39,000 Navajo's

living in the study area. The only town of significant size is the Glen

Canyon Dam community of Page with a population of 4,525 (1978). Principal

industries are agriculture (primarily grazing livestock), tourism, and the

Navajo Powerplant located near Page.

Hydrologic Conditions

A summary of water year precipitation at selected stations in and near

the study area is presented in Table 2.

Monthly runoff records for the stream gaging station, "Chinle Creek near

Mexican Water, Arizona," are shown in Table 3. This station measures runoff

from 3,300 square miles (contributing area), which is about half of the study

area total.

Irrigation Consumptive Use

In the Arizona portion of the Upper Colorado River Basin there are 26

Navajo Indian irrigation projects, 22 of which have been developed. (In

addition, there is a 40-acre non-Indian development at Lees Ferry.) There

are large year-to-year variations in the irrigated acreage and cropping

patterns due mainly to economic factors and the variability of the water

supply.

A cJ:'op acreage report for the irrigation projects was obtained from the

Bureau of Indian Affairs offices at Window Rock. The 1980 irrigated acreage

by crop types is as follows:

Row Crops (corn)
Small Grains
Forage (alfalfa)
Horticulture (melons,
squash, etc)

4,437 acres
283 acres
1,637 acres

1,426 acres

~_.
