C,O
.....
w

-5-

(....'

CDNSUMPTIVE USE OF PROPOSED ALTER~ATIVES

(.7)

C)

Alternatives

Each of the proposed alternatives are described briefly
below, and shown schematically in Figures 1 through 7. Table
1 summarizes the consumptive use of each alternative by river
reach and shows the total rate of decreed absolute direct
flow water rights for each reach.

State Line alternative includes collection by alluvial wells
at Dotsero, mouth collection at Glenwood Springs, and surface
collection in South Canyon. The collected water travels by
pipeline to evaporation ponds 120 miles west of New Castle,
near the Colorado-Utah border. Disposal of the salt would be
in the evaporation ponds (Figure 1).

New Castle alternative is comprised of diversion from Dotsero
by alluvial wells and from Glenwood Springs by collection at
the spring mouth. The water will then be piped to a site west
of New Castle, where it will be treated by reverse osmosis.
The treatment plant would produce brine at the rate of 20% of
the input volume. The brine produced will be deep well
injected (Figure 2).

Separate Systems alternative has saline water collected by
alluvial wells at Dotsero treated by reverse osmosis at
Dotsero. The brine produced (which is estimated to be 15% of
the input volume) would be disposed of by evaporation ponds
near Dotsero, and the treated water returned to the Colorado
River. Saline water would be collected at the spring mouth in
Glenwood Springs and piped to a point west of New Castle.
There it would be treated by reverse osmosis, the treated
water returned to the river and the brine (which is estimated
to be 25% of the input volume) deep well injected (Figure 3).

I'

cD

leooa'd Rice Consulting Waler Engineers.lne
