Fairchild, Assistant Commissioner, Bureau of Reclamation, <br /> <br />J Department of the Interior, has today been named Director of the U. S. <br /> <br />Water Resources Council, by Chairman Rogers C. B. Morton. <br /> <br />In announcing the appointment, Chairman Morton said, "Mr. Fairchild <br />carries into his new position a broad background in water and land <br />resources development and management at the local, State, and Federal <br />levels of government, and has a wide acquaintanceship with officials <br />having responsibilities in those fields. Weare confident he will provide <br />dynamic leadership of the Council's activities to coordinate planning <br />programs of Federal and State water agencies, river basin commissions, <br />and interagency conunittees, so that essential water needs of people can <br />be met. " <br /> <br />The U. S. Water Resources Council is an independent executive agency, <br />established by Congress in 1965 to provide for the optimum conservation, <br />development, and utilization of the Nation's natural resources, through <br />the coordinated planning of water and related land resources, the <br />establishment of seven River Basin Commissions and a Council of 12 <br />participating Federal agencies, and by providing financial assistance <br />to the States in order to increase State participation in water resources <br />planning. <br /> <br />Mr. Fairchild has been Assistant Commissioner for Resource Planning <br />in the Bureau of Reclamation's Washington headquarters since October 25, <br />1970. The Council post has been vacant since April 1, when W.
