<br />Ground-water levels cOlllinued 10 dedine seasonally
<br />in nearly the entire !'iortheast region (see map). Levels
<br />rose III northeastern COllncctkut :1Od adjacclll M3S~chu-
<br />setH, and were 3bove average for end of August in much
<br />of the same Jrea. Waler levels remained beluw average in
<br />Delaware. \laryland. most of ~ew Jersey. southeastern
<br />Pennsylvania. central :-':ew York, and also In most of
<br />New llarnpshnc and paris of adjacent Slates.
<br />In th~' Southeast. ground- water levels dedined In
<br />Nurth Carolilla and \1isslssippi: trends were mixed in
<br />other !iOutheastern Slates. Water levels were above aver-
<br />age in Kentucky. and below average in Arkansas and
<br />Florida. Levels were mixed with respect to average in
<br />other southeastern State~. A new high ground.waler level
<br />for ,\uE'u~t was reached in Kentucky. A new low ground-
<br />water level for August was recorded in the key well III
<br />.~lemphis in westelll Tennessee. and several new August
<br />low levels were reponed ill Lee Coullty in Mississippi.
<br />In the central and western Great Lakes States, ground-
<br />water level trends were mixed. Water levels were normal
<br />or below aVl'rage in Ohio. and mixed with respecl 10
<br />average in Minnesota. ~1ichjgall, and low:L
