Agricultural Acreage Calculations

Example calculations to reach the final acreage used to compute the consumptive use
of irrigated agriculture in the Upper Colorado River basin states of Colorado, Utah, and
Wyoming.

GIS coverages were provided by the State of Colorado and the State of Utah for
determination of land use types in the Colorado River Basin water shed areas. A
formerly constructed coverage of the State of Wyoming land use by the USBR
Technical Services Center Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Group was
used for this study.

Two other sources of agricultural acreage were utilized in computing the irrigated
agricultural acreages. These sources were the County Agricultural Statistics (CAS) of
each of the above mentions states and the USDA National Agricultural Statistics
Service Census of Agriculture 1997 (COA). These two sources of data were used to
verify the accuracy of each of the land use coverages for these three states.

This is a demonstration of the methodology for computing the irrigated agricultural lands
with an example county from Colorado. This will document strategies and reasoning for
using these final acreages.

Delta County, Colorado will be used as the example county for determining the total and
disaggregated irrigated acreage for each HUC in the county. First of all a compilation
the GIS, CAS, and COA irrigated acreage for the entire county.
