-11-

approximately 30 inches.
Growing Season
The growing season is short, 90 to lZO days.
Temperature
During summer, the days are warm and the nights are
cool. Winter is cold, occasionally down to 300F below zero.
Geology
The Closed Basin of the San LUis Valley is a shallow
depression or topographically closed area within a large
valley which is filled with alluvial sediments washed into
it from the high mountain ranges bounding it,on the east,
west and north. The maximum depth of these alluvial sedi-
ments is not yet known but oil exploration drilling and
seismic surveys show evidence that they extend to several
thousands of feet below the present land surface. The
water-bearing layers of these sediments extend practically
from the surface to at least as deep as the sediments have
been drilled and probably to their full depth. At this
time the depth of the deepest water producing well in the
Closed Basin is reported to be greater than 2,000 feet.
Most wells in the Valley, both within and outside of the
Closed Basin are, to some degree, artesian, with many of
them flowing. Even the lowest estimates of ground water
in storage in the entire San Luis Valley run as high as
several hundred million acre-feet. The Closed Basin area is

included within this area.

000395

....
