Two
major coal-fired steam generating plants, the
Four Corners Power Plant located near Farm-
ington, New Mexico and Mohave Power Plant
located in Mohave VallC\', Nevada are the first

691731-204 3,67 1M

power projeCTS to be undertaken by electric
utilities as members of -W' estern Energy Supply
and Transmission Associates (WEST Associ-
ates).
The Four-Corners pro jeer, an addition to the
existing 575 -Mw plant of the Arizona Public
Servicc Co., will consist of two 755-Mw gen-
crating units. Six utilities will participate in
ownership of the new units with Southern.
California Edison Company owning the largest
share. Construction commenced lVlav 1966; the
first of the units is scheduled for operation in
July 1969 and the sccqnd is expected to be in
operation one year later. \Vater for cooling will
be pumped from the San Juan River under a
New Mexico license to divert up to 5] ,600 acrc-
feet annually to the Four Corners power plant
cooling pond, of which approximately 38,000
acre-feet will be uscd consumptively.
The I,SOO-!Vlw coal-fired i\-!ohave power
plant will bc jointly owned by Southern Cali-
fornia Edison Company, Nevada Power Com-
pany, and Salt River Valley \Vater Users' As-
sociation; however Southern California Edison
Company will be thc principal owner. The first
750-Mw unit of the plant is expected to be in
opcration in 1970 and the second in ] 971. The
power plant will consumptively use 30,000 acrc-
fect annualh- of Colorado River watcr, which
will be charged to Nevada's entitlement.
A study made bv the staff of the Board
showed th"at current In-basin consumpti,.e use of
water of the Colorado River System for thermal
power generation is approximately 45,000 acre-
feet per year. It is anticipated that during the
next 20 years thermal plants having an aggre-
gate capacity of 20,000 megawatts will be built
to make use of thc vast coal resources in the
Colorado River Basin, which according to the
staff study would require the consumptive use
of an estimated additional 400,000 acre-feet an-
nually from the Colorado River system for
power purposes.

o

/'.;lIltJ jll C.^ltFOU<lA OFfICE or STATE r"INTlNG
