<br />~ <br />C\1 <br />C""; <br /> <br />c <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />lrrigable land is located on the mesas and in the tributary valleys <br /> <br />and basins to the south of the San Miguel River and consists of the <br /> <br />Norwood-Redvale area north and east of Naturita Creek, and the East <br /> <br />Lilylands and Dry Creek Basin areas south and west of the creek. the <br /> <br />Norwood-Redvale area consists of 15,150 acres, of which ll,480 are <br /> <br />presently irrigated, and is located on Wright's Hesa at an average <br /> <br />elevation of 6,900 feet. <br /> <br />The East Lilylancis area consi.ats of 1,665 <br /> <br />acres, of which 90 are presently irrigated, and is also located on <br /> <br />a meaa at an average elevation of 6,400 feet. The topography of tbese <br /> <br />two areas is relatively uniform to rolling, with slight variations <br /> <br />because of surface drainage. The Dry Creek Basin area consists of <br /> <br />2,945 acres, of which 1,120 are presently irrigated, and is large and oval- <br /> <br />shaped with fairly uniform and gentle slopes at an average elevation <br /> <br />of 6,500 feet. <br /> <br />Colorado-Ute Electric Association operates a 35-megawatt steam- <br /> <br />electric powerplant southeast of Nucla on the San Miguel River. A small <br /> <br />open-pit coal mine is used to fuel the plant, and cooling water comes <br /> <br />\ <br /> <br />from the river. <br /> <br />Colorado-Ute also generates hydroelectric power at a <br /> <br />3.6-megawatt plant at Ames near the headwaters of the San Miguel River. <br /> <br />Storage capacity for this plant 18 provided by two lakes on the South <br /> <br />Fork of the San Miguel River. <br /> <br />The cODDllunities in the project area have piped municipal water <br /> <br />systems. Approximately one-half of the domestic water for farms comes <br /> <br />from wells. The remainder is ciiverted or hauled from nearby streams and <br /> <br />canals and is stored in cisterns. <br /> <br />The climate of the project area is temperate and semiarid. At <br /> <br />Norwood the mean annual temperature is 43.9" F, and maximum and minimum <br /> <br />5 <br />
