In

dry years, the towns of Norwood and Naturita and the rural areas often

face short water supplies, and they are experiencing population growth

that makes the existing systems inadequate to meet future needs. Also,

the culinary supply for Norwood is adversely affected during periods of

high runoff because the town lacks sediment removal facilities. Mdi-

tional industrial water supplies would permit Colorado-Ute to build a new

steam-electric powerplant near Nucla.

The company is interested in

constructing two 250-megawatt units to expand its output to meet power

needs in western Colorado. but has not made a firm cOlllllitment for water

from the San Miguel Project.

Recreation

According to the State of Colorado, additional facilities are needed

in western Colorado for recreational activities such as boating, fishing,

and picnicking.

Project Plan at Authorization
The plan at the time of project authorization, as described in

the feasibility report of 1966, provided for a project water supply of

121,800 acre-feet annually. The water would be developed primarily from

the San Miguel River.

An average annual irrigation water supply of

77,800 acre-feet would serve 38,950 acres of land, including 26,420 acres.

of full-service land and 12,530 acres of supplemental service land.
