The large majority of these jobs were located in the
southern counties of the region, particularly in Lea and Curry Counties
which together accounted for nearly three-fourths of the regional
employment.

Oklahoma

Total employment in Oklahoma is approximately 1.2 million jobs. Key
industrial sectors contributing to this total employment are: wholesale and
retail trade, government, services and manufacturing. About 4% of the total
employment is engaged in farming.

Employment in the Ogallala Region is different from statewide
employment trends. The percentage of the 1 abor force engaged in farmi ng
decreased only by about 16% in the Region compared to nearly 30% in areas
outside the Region from 1960-1980. Agricultural employment from 1970-1980
actually increased by about 4% in the Region, in contract to the statewide
trend.

Texas

Texas reported a total employment level of over six million jobs in
1980. Whol esal e and retai 1 trade and manufacturi ng provided the greatest
number of jobs. Other important sources of employment were servi ces,
government and constructi on. Total employment growth in Texas has con-
sistently exceeded national rates of growth in virtually all sectors.
During the past two decades, total nonagricultural employment increased more
than 120% in Texas versus about 65% for the United States.

Withi n the Hi gh Pl ai ns Regi on of the state, tot a 1 employment was about
500,000 jobS in 1980. Agricul tural jobs compri se a 1 arger-than-average
share of total employment in the northern part of the Texas High Plains,
while mining industries and wholesale trade provides a substantial part of
the employment in the southern areas of the Region.

1-35
