The flow in the river is seasonally variable. o Republican River Basin - The river originates in eastern Colorado as the South Fork Republican, North Fork Republican and Arikaree Rivers which join near the Nebraska-Kansas-Colorado border. The river runs through the southwestern portion of Nebraska and back into Kansas. The Republican River Basin occu- pies a large portion of the southwestern corner of the state. There are five major multiple use reservoirs in the basin. These are Enders, Hugh Butler, Harry Strunk, Swanson and Harlan County reservoi rs. Natural vegetation is mostly mixed prairie, with some sandsage prairie, short grass prairie, floodplain prairie and forest and eastern deciduous forest (Republ ican River Basin Water Qual ity Management Plan, May 1976). Southern Phelps and Kearney Count i es contai n si gnifi cant wetl ands, and the Repub 1; can River contains some marshes and sloughs. Many of the streams in the basin are of local fishery importance. These are principally warm water fisheries. Flow varies seaso- nally except for creeks which originate in the Sandhills (Rock Creek, Frenchman River and Stinking Water Creek). The Nebraska Game and Parks CO!l1mission operates a trout hatchery on Rock Creek. Depletions of ground water discharges to the stream due to irrigation have become a cause for concern. o Big Blue River Basin - The Big Blue River originates in south central Nebraska and runs generally south into Kansas. The basin is primarily in the tall grass prairie vegetative zone. Most riparian vegetation is elm-ash-cottonwood with bur oak forests in the lower parts of the basin. Fisheries are warm water and many of them are of local importance. Streamflow is seasonally variable. The wetlands of the rainwater basins which occur in the upper part of the basin support significant waterfowl production. Two major reservoi rs, Cub Creek 14A and Mud Creek 4J (Rockford Lake) are located in the basin. Cub Creek 14A is principally for flood control and Mud Creek 4J is primarily for flood control and recreati on. o Little Blue River Basin - The Little Blue River originates in southeastern Nebraska, running southeast into Kansas. The prin- cipal native vegetation is mixed grass prairie in the west and tall grass prairie in the east. Most riparian vegetaiton is elm-ash-cottonwood association with bur oak forests in the lower part of the basin. Streamflow is principally seasonally variable, although a few reaches of the river's channel receive ground water discharge and have relatively high base flow. There are no major reservoirs in the basin. Fisheries are all warm water and mostly of only local importance. The Rainwater 1-19
