Four new streamflow stations were constructed in Montana.
New drainage studies were started on the Badger-Fisher and Birch Creek
Units and a comprehensive water resources study was started on the
Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation.

,..:~.:..:.;:~:;.:~.:~:;:~~.:.;::: i
. ." ~..,. .,. ,: '"
.',

.-...:....... ,"
: ..:::.<:~.;}-;:~.:. ~.:...

Several reports on the hydrology of the Prairie Potholes of North
Dakota were published and others are in the final publication process.

"'::-'::"'~:'..::.::./':':
......:..... ..-.......

~!~~

.~:.:>-/: ,~_.;.:. :~.~: :;~

Investigations, designed to provide basic geologic information and
to increase the knowledge of mineral resources for cooperating agencies,
were continued on 74 separate projects during the fiscal year. During
that period 9 professional papers, six bulletins, and 34 other maps and
reports, related wholly or in part to these studies, were published.

.... ~.' The setback was attributed largely to
an extended strike in the copper industry. Although the four-year,
record-breaking run was broken in 1967 the value of mineral production
in the basin was still an impressive $7.5 million daily.

"'>'~'A",.,; I

, . ,":.."
~i'~~;'>-.>O'\ I
'~;:;\~~:~r:~ ;:~.J:\~~
. .-,", '":".":
~.<;.'<'")\)-~, <
:~('~.::,......:. ::.::.:

Throughout the year work continued on Water-Related Mineral Resource
Studies, Mineral Examinations of Reservoir Sites together with Compre-
hensive Studies in the Missouri River Basin and in the basins of the
Souris, Red, and Rainy ,Rivers.

Good progress was made, too, on studies of petroleum and natural
gas and on mineral industry feasibility studies on Indian reservations.

Bureau of Mines' studies on fossil fuels for generating low-cost
power have resulted in two draft-form manuscripts, one on "Strippable
Coal Reserves of Montana," and the other, "Strippab1e Coal Reserves of
Wyoming." Both will be published soon as MRB Preliminary Reports.
Scheduled for completion in fiscal year 1969 is a third report in this
series, "Strippable Lignite Reserves of North Dakota."

A similar report nearing completion delineates fuel resources for
thermal power in the Kansas and Missouri portions of the Missouri'River

Basin.

12

,'W" '....

. ~".' ~ ';.'

.
