ZINGERS

This section contains a compilation of numerous ideas for more water-related class or extra-curricular activ-
ities, Some are spin-ofts from the Lessons section and others are simply ideas that the teacher can develop as
time and energy permit.

Mathematics

The opportunities for math lessons in conjunction with
every area of the curriculum are virtually limitless,
However, a few unique Zingers include,

. As a class, or small group, read the school water meter
for a month, record the data and compute the con-
sumption, Meet with the principal and share the
results, Try to reduce water use by establishing a cam-
pus water conservation program,

. From the data on p, 8 of the Capt, Hydro Workbook,
total the annual precipitation for each year for both
sites, Compare the wet year-dry year cycles with the
residential water consumption pattems, (Data on p, 23
of Capt, Hydro,)

. Graph and chart the results of the Home Water Con-
sumption Survey, p. 25, Capt. Hydro; Computation
Sheet, p. 10, Isolate a variable, e,g" number of chil-
dren, and use it as a basis of comparison, Hypothesize
the effects of large vs, small families on water
consumption.

. Using a bucket, measure the amount of water flowing
into a stonn drain on a rainy day, Compute the
volume per minute, hour and day. How many people
could this amount supply per day?

. Figure quantity of water required to irrigate a given
field with one inch of water.

Science

. Grow and compare plants using the French Intensive
Method and the regular garden method of cultivation,

. Using individuals or small groups, have each conduct
a water experiment for the class and explain the
process involved and the results.

. Set up an aquarium in the classroom, using local water
flora and fish.

.. Study the differences in results of washing identically
stained cloths in hot water and cold water; using differ-
ent soaps and detergents in various combinations.

. Take core samples of campus lawn to check for water
needs; compare the results with the school gardener's
water schedule,

. Invite the school gardener to explain his campus wa-
tering practices to the class; investigate possible water
conservation techniques,

. Invite a school custodian to come in and demonstrate
changing a washer in the classroom,

. Experiment with the lathering capabUities of various
soaps in water from different water systems in the
area.

. Compare rainfall at your campus with that of another
school.

. Take an Erosion Hike to spot examples of such water
damage; note whether the impacted area is a natural
selling or one altered by man

. Compare the data gathered in the rain gauge ex-
periment (p. 13, Capt, Hydro) with that of the local
weather station, Note whether differences are caused
by different climatic conditions or errors in
measurement

. Make a water wheel and test it in a stream.

. Locate and research examples of local water projects,
e.g" breakwater construction, stream channeling,

. Examine various water samples under a microscope.

. Study wave action in a pool; at the beach,

. Research several ways of making drinking water safe
when camping or hiking,

Social Science

. Take a Water Walk around the school and map the
location of various water.consuming devices.

. Construct and conduct a campus or community poll
on water awareness and water conservation.

. Research the development of a major water project,
e.g" Grand Coulee Dam

. Do a water good deed every day for a week, e,g" wa.
tering the garden, washing dishes, and write a diary
describing your activities and the reactions to them.

0270

-29-
