A Note to Teachers

This upper elementary workbook has been prepared as a part of
Project WATER (Water Awareness Through Education and
Research), sponsored by the East Bay Municipal Utility District,
Oakland, California, The program utilizes a multi and interdisciplinary
curriculum which incorporates goals and objectives currently em-
ployed in most school districts. It is not intended to be a separate
science unit on water; rather it employs every area of the curriculum
and spans grades Kindergarten through 12th. The following project
goals fall roughly into grade level groupings but are not mutually
exclusive of any particular level.

1. To develop an APPRECIATION of water's life-sustaining role in
man's survival and an AWARENESS of the limitations of its abun-
dance, (Primary Level)

2, To acquire KNOWLEDGE of water, its physical properties and its
function in our environment (Upper Elementary Level)

3, To identify the PROBLEMS relating to water and its use, (Junior
and Senior High School Level)

4, To select SOLUTIONS, after examining the alternatives, which take
into consideration all facets of life for both short and long term
results, (Junior and Senior High School Level)

5, To demonstrate the APPLlCA TION of knowledge and skills in func-
tional water problem solving. (Junior and Senior High School
Level)

Thus, this workbook stresses the KNOWLEDGE of water, but con-
tinues to integrate experiences which themselves lead to attainment of
the four other goals.
With the growing emphasis on environmental concerns, this pro-
gram and its accompanying materials can serve as a catalyst to build a
general appreciation of our total environment, a new look at the abun-
dance of our nation's resources and a revision in our attitude toward
their use, Fortunately, water is a renewable resource but it is not
limitless in its supply, Its conservation can enhance and augment
current supplies to meet the many needs of the community; its
thoughtless waste might well predpitate a shortage, heretofore
unknown,
Finally, these materials have been prepared with the enjoyment and
excitement of the students in mind, as well as their education. A max-
imum of individual participation is encouraged as they seek to solve
real life problems of the home and community, Teachers are
encouraged to view the lessons as open-ended, allowing additional ex-
periences to follow, such as those suggested in "Zingers," We are
pleased to make this contribution to environmental education and
hope that the eventual results will reflect a new, collective water
conscience,

-2-
