The total salt loading from project
land. <.1110 co"lnals for the 1977 Fr2S plan would be 50,650 tons annua11y.

The project modification of changi.ng the ali.gnment of the Towaoe
Canal would eli"tnate the 7 ,500 tons of annual salt loaeling that would
have occurred with the west ali.gnlTIent. The construction of the silli.nity
clll1trol features would further reduce salt loading hy an additional
24,500 tons (rounded) annually at a cost effectiveness of $83 per ton of
salt removed. The total effect of all project modifications, including
the realigning of the Towaoe Canal, would be an annual reduction of
approximately 32,000 tons. The net effect of the project, including
project modifications, ~ould he an increase of 18,650 tons of salt per
year, as shown in Summary Table 2.

Summa ry Table 2
Effects of project modifications on salinity
(Unit--tons of salt)
_________n____'______ Sa 1 t'-----

loading Revised
as pre- sal t
sented loading
in 1977 for 1977
_______________J'.E.?_ n:s planY

----------------
Effects
of
proj ect
modifica-
tions on
~lan

Salt
loading
proposed
--~"--

Dolores Project area--
project land and canals +10,080 +43,150 0 +43,150
Towaoc Canal--west alignment 'l:./O + 7,500 -7,500 0
Salinity control features 110 3/0 4/-24,500 i/-24,50~
___T..otal J?.r:'?i~<:.~f.e_'=.t___+lO,08~ +50,65Q.__--=-.3},000 __~J~~O
II Since the 1977 FES, salt loading analyses have included seepage
from project canals as well as the irrigation of project land.
'l:...1 The salinity effects of canal seepage were not estimated in the
lqn FES.
3/ Salinity control was not a part of the 1977 FES plan.
II This salt reduction does not include the on-farm program of the
SCS for reducing salt loading.

No action alternative

The no action alternative with respect to the salinity control pro-
gram is included to allow a comparison between the construction of
salinity control features and the anticipated future without saliaity
control. This alternative would consist of constructing the Dolores
Project as described in the In7 FES and in the Finding of No Signifi-
cant Impact for the addition of hydroelectric power at HcPhee Dam and at
the Towaoc Canal. This no actlon alternative assumes no expenditure of
salinity control funds by Reclamation. Under the no action alternattve,
the SCS on-farm prograJn for removiClg 38,000 tons of salt annually would
be impacted, but the reduction in tons of salt removed is unquantifiable.

5-9
