<br />. <br /> <br />4 <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />DEPARTMENT OF TIlE INTERIOR <br />BUREAU or RECLAMATION <br />NOTICE OF INITIATION OF INVESTIGATION <br /> <br />Name of Investigation: <br /> <br />Water Conservation Opportunities - Coachella <br />Valley Water District, Lower Coloradu River <br />Water Conservation and Efficient Use Program <br /> <br />Location of Investigation: Coachel,la Valley Water District, <br />Riverside County, San Diego County, and <br />Imperial County, California <br /> <br />Date Investigation Initiated: October 1982 <br />Probable Date of Completiun: September 1985 <br /> <br />1. Scope of InvestigHion. This study ~lill consider various <br />proposed methods of conserving water within the district. 80th <br />structural and nonstructural actio/l plans will be developed which ore <br />responsive to local needs and goals. <br /> <br />2. Nature of Problem Involved. The Southwestern States have <br />long recognized the '-'Ieed to conserve their limited fresh \'/Jter <br />resource in order to meet growing demands. Conservation of water by <br />improving irrigation efficiency and water management practices is an <br />attractive means of util izing more of the available water supply. <br /> <br />3. Public Information. Public meetings \vill be held as the <br />study progresses, at Which time interested agencies, organizations, <br />and individuals may present their views. <br /> <br />4. Prospective Solutions. Prospective water conservation <br />measures to be considered include: a demollstration 11ater t'ianagernent <br />and Conservation (Wt-lC) program which will seek ways to optimize <br />onfarm irrigation practices; reduction of operational Haste through <br />the use of regulating reservoirs; reduction of seepage in th~ <br />Coachella Canal; and improvement of operational efficiency through <br />system automation. <br /> <br />5. Reports. At several points during the study, status reports <br />~lill be \'witten to describe the p"ogress being made on each study <br />alternative. At the end uf the study, a report \vill be ~Iritten ~/liich <br />describes the various proposed methuds in detail. The report will <br />i dent ify any methods wh i ch appea r to have potentia 1 and deserve <br />further investigation. <br /> <br />0.986 <br />
