The Saline

Water Transport and Use Project Office is staffed by both Federal and

industry participants.

Aquatrain is potentially a supplement to the

Big Sandy salinity control program or an alternative to it.

Related activities

Bureau of Land Management

Most of the unit area is Federally owned and managed by the Bureau

of Land Management (BLM) for livestock grazing; oil, gas, and mineral

production; recreation; and fish and wildlife.

Much of this land is

presently leased for livestock grazing.

All lands managed by BLM within the unit area known or believed to

contain oil ot gas may be leased by the Secretary of the Interior. Once

an oil and gas lease has been issued, geophysical exploration, drilling

of wells, construction of access roads and support facilities, and/or

production and processing of hydrocarbons and byproducts may occur (BLM

1982b). BLM has issued some oil and gas leases in the unit area and has

additional applications pending.

Some public lands within the unit area contain trona and sodium

carbonate brine (BLM 1982a).

BLM is responsible for the issuance of

new and renewed leases for all Federally-controlled sodium minerals

under the terms of the Mineral Leasing Act of 1920 as amended. BLM also

has responsibility for granting rights-of-way for associated facilities

20
