FUTURE ACTIVITIES

Monitoring of the canal and lateral system would continue. The

salinity contributions from the valley would be monitored throughout

continued planning and during and after construction to verify the

salinity reduction effected by implementation of the unit.

Feasibility studies on the Lower Gunnison Basin Unit are nearing

completion. The Regional Director's proposed feasibility report and draft

environmental statement is scheduled for review by other agencies and the

Water Resources Council during 1981. Following this review, the Regional

Director's feasibility report and the final environmental statement can be

completed and the Secretary of the Interior could request authorization

for construction. Under current schedules, the Secretary's report could

be forwarded to Congress in December 1983.

If, based on the Secretary's report, Congress authorizes the unit

for construction, advance planning studies would be conducted beginning in

1985. Advance planning is expected to take about 2 years. During advance

planning, costs and designs for the recommended plan would be refined and

other options would be considered if new studies prove other alternatives

to be more cost effective. OM&R contracts would be negotiated and signed

with the Uncompahgre Valley Water Users Association to assure that the

new facilities would be operated and maintained efficiently.

Based on the schedule for these activities, construction on the

Lower Gunnison Basin Unit could begin in 1987. Construction would occur

in stages and would be completed in about 9 years.

001696

25
