<br />Natural flows ot the La Plata River together with releases to the
<br />river trom the Animas Diversion Canal and return flow,S from project
<br />use would be used for irrigation and municipal and industrial pur-
<br />poses in the southern portion of the project area in Colorado and
<br />New Mexico. Canals heading at the potential Long Hollo'W Diversion
<br />Dam WQuld divert on both sides of the river. 'The Long Hollo'W Canal
<br />~uld extend southeast, delivering vater to the Three Buttes Reser-
<br />voir. Part of the reservoir vater would be available for use at a
<br />coal-fired steam-electric generating plant expected to be constructed
<br />nearby, and the remainder would be distributed for irrigation through
<br />the McDennott Canal that 'Would extend south from the reserv8ir. The
<br />Meadows Diversion Canal would extend southwest from the Long Hollow
<br />Diversion Dam to the Ute Meadows Reservoir, releasing -part of it$
<br />water for irrigation en route. Ute Meadows Reservoir water ,would be
<br />released into the Meadows Canal and distributed for irrigation.
<br />Some wate~ for municipal and industrial use would also be m_ade avail-
<br />able at the Long Hollow Diversion Dam. The Helton Diversion Dam and
<br />some ditches and laterals would be constructed to supplement exist-
<br />ing structures in diverting vater from the La Plata River below the
<br />Long Hollow Diversion Dam and delivering it to nearby lands. Other
<br />facilities required for the diversion of river water for mUnicipal
<br />and industrial uses ~uld be provided by the water users.

<br />The La Plata Water Conservancy District in Colorado and the La Plata
<br />Conservancy District in New Mexico, 'With present boundaries expanded
<br />as appropriate and with suitable arrangements with Indian interests,
<br />would serve as project administrative and contracting agencies. The
<br />conservancy districts and the Indians wou~d arrange for the appoint-
<br />ment of a project management body.
