<br />LA..'il>: Currently, there are 3.3 mllhon acres of''\;lderness designated
<br />in Colorado, mostly on National Forest lands. The Bureau of Land
<br />Management (BUvf) manages another 8.3 million acres. VIrtually none
<br />of which is currently protected as wilderness. When all of the areas In
<br />this proposal are desIgn:lted as v.llderness. roughly 13% ofBLM's land
<br />in the state and another I % or Forest Servtce land w1l1 be added to the
<br />~atlOnal Wilderness Prc:sef'o'atton System. This new acreage amounts to
<br />::% of Colorado's land base of 66 million acres. The legislation does not Cross Mountain

<br />ACl'n1TIES: Under the \\.'ilderness Act of 1964, development and mechanized activities are prohibited
<br />within designated Wllderness. mcludmg loggmg, road building, new mining, oil and gas drilling, and use
<br />of motonzed and mechanIzed equIpment. All existing mining claims are honored. and livestock grazing,
<br />where previously existing, IS allowed to contmue. Use of wheelchairs, treatment of diseases and insects,
<br />fIre suppressIon acti,,;ties and all forms of non. mechanized recreation are allowed. including hiking,
<br />backpacking, horsepacking, hunting, fishmg, rafting and canoemg, cross-country skiing, and sciennfic
<br />research.
