SEIGEL
RO<'ky MoUnl~;Q N..._ StaH Wril<>r
The Denver Water Board voted <m Tuesday to
study a new site as an alternative to the $239
million Two Forks Dam and Reservoir Project.
The board unanimously approved a recom-
mendation from the Army Corps of Engineers
that the site. located on the South Platte River
six miles south of the confluence of the river's
north and south branches, be analyzed as part of
a federally required environmental impact
study.
The corps already is studying five sites for the
dam Ollong both the north and south forks of the
rivt'r in south Jefferson and Park counties -
induding the Two Forks Reservoir.
Board spokesman Edward J. Ruetz s.aid the

-- '-~._---

r-
=',

-

==

new location will be considered along with five
other proposed locations.
The fjve board members approved a $147,000
appropriation to fund extra costs of the study
that would be required to analyze the new site.

The water board all along bas preferred the
Two Forks location where the two branches of
the South Platte River meet near Deckers.

That project, the largest such plan ever con-
sidered by the water board, would store about
866.000 acre-feet of water for use in the Denver
metro area. An acre-foot is about 326.000 gal-
lons.

But many environmental groups have op-
posed the project because of its size and because
the project would displace a recreational area

-

---

used by many Denver-area residents in south
Jefferson County.
During the meeting, the board was told by
corps officials that the study. scheduled for
completion in August 1984. was running about a
month behind schedule. But that time may be
made up between now and the end of tbe pro-
ject. they said.
The Water Board also unanimQusly awarded a
$12.1 million contract for Phase 2 contrucUon of
the Foothills Water Trflalment Plant to Madsen
Western Builders Inc. of Thornton.
Madsen was the lowest bidder of 15 appli-
cants for the project. which will double the
plant's present 125 million-gallon-a-day capaci-
ty by January 1986 with the addition of new
filter beds.

-

-
